Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Testing is a process developed to identify and measure the presence of leaks within a sealed unit. During the leak testing procedure, pressurized helium gas is filled into the sealed unit. A sensing probe is placed at the location of the seal to detect the presence of any helium escaping from within the pressurized unit. Ideally, helium molecules will permeate most weld discontinuities at a relatively fast rate for easy leak detection.

Physical product deformation such as collapsing and enlarged holes are possible when a product fails the test.
